Goodbye South Wedge, Hello People’s Pantry

  • by

The last year-and-a-half has been a pivotal time in the history of South Wedge Food Pantry. The Covid-19 pandemic, and our decision to keep serving our clients, changed us for the better. We transformed into the largest free grocery delivery service in all of Rochester, serving thousands of people each month, either by delivery or from our front door. We met amazing people along the way and kept hunger out of the homes of so many who lost income due to the layoffs in 2020. All while operating on a shoestring budget.

The South Wedge went through its own transformation, albeit much more gradual. It became a destination neighborhood, and more and more properties were developed as rentals. In 2017 the congregation of Calvary St. Andrews met for the last time. The writing was on the wall for the church itself. This year the Presbytery of the Genesee Valley accepted an offer on the building, part of which will be converted into apartments. It was time for us to take off our training wheels and move out on our own.

After a long search process we are thrilled to announce our new home. 555 Avenue D sits at the heart of the 14621 neighborhood (or, if you’ve lived here a long time, the Butterhole Neighborhood, named for the delicious ethnic bakeries that graced the area). Sitting at the corner of Joseph Ave, our main entrance is in the rear of the Lincoln Library. Between the book library, the toy library, and the pantry, we hope to become a fantastic resource for the community in ways we couldn’t imagine in the Wedge. Expect some exciting (and safe) new opportunities to get involved with food security in Rochester.

With This new identity comes a new sense of duty to all of Rochester and surrounding towns. This isn’t just a neighborhood food program, it belongs to the people of Rochester!

It didn’t make sense to continue with the South Wedge name any longer, so after many conversations and client input we’re thrilled to announce our new name: The People’s Pantry of Rochester. With this new identity comes a new sense of duty to all of Rochester and surrounding towns. This isn’t just a neighborhood food program, it belongs to the people of Rochester!

We expect to be up and running very soon. Our contact info hasn’t changed. If you are unable to get to our new location you may fill out a food delivery request. You may pick up a share of groceries at our door beginning November 1st, and our old location at 68 Ashland St will have food available until the end of the month, or when supplies run out – whichever comes first. If you’re taking the bus here we’re on Route 3 (Joseph). As always, if you have any questions please give us a call at (585) 325-4950 or email us at SouthWedgeFoodRochester@gmail.com.
